A surface design has the potential to unite the essence, character, and significance of your brand in a subtle yet powerful way. It becomes a recognisable symbol, adding long-term value to your business. Think of Marimekko’s Unikko pattern, embodying the brand’s identity since 1964, or Burberry’s iconic check and Chanel’s signature tweed from the 1920s.
I believe in the expressive power of patterns to convey stories and define brand identity. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind pattern or a bespoke collection for larger production runs, I’ll guide you in exploring the endless possibilities within textile and surface design.
With a background in communication, fashion, and over a decade in textiles, I approach patterns and colour – the unifying element in my work – as an instrument to connect people, stories, and materials in a way that’s both purposeful and evocative.
My design expertise lies in repeat patterns – designs that flow seamlessly and endlessly – as well as graphic compositions that become the product itself, like tapestries and rugs.
You envision a world where design is not a fleeting trend or disposable item, but a lasting, valuable addition to your brand identity. I share that beautiful vision and understand precisely what you stand for. With Kukka, I strive to make a positive impact on the world through design and colour.
Living wages are as essential to me as ecological sustainability, and accessible designs as important as exclusivity. My designs honour the past and cultural heritage while remaining contemporary – designs that make a statement without shouting, striking a careful balance between vibrancy and tranquillity.
My experience shows that every project is unique. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula. You have your own distinct needs, and I like to honour that. Still, having a clear roadmap is essential:
The design process we enter is one of collaboration and co-creation, where our visions seamlessly merge in the final outcome. After an initial meeting to align on goals and scope, I create a tailored proposal outlining timelines, budgets, and deliverables. Each phase is flexible and customised to the unique needs of the project, with space for feedback and adjustments as needed.
Around fifteen years ago, when I began as an in-house designer in the mainstream fashion industry, I was disheartened by some of the industry’s lack of regard for the people and the products they created. A garment, made by countless skilled hands, was often reduced to little more than “trade.”
After seven years as a designer, I felt a strong urgency to redefine my role in a field that calls for a radically different approach.
For me, design is not just a commodity; it’s a way to make a positive impact in the world. I do this by exploring the role of colour within design, collaborating with clients and industries who share this vision.
The name of my studio, Kukka, means “blossom” in Finnish, and it beautifully reflects my design philosophy. Just as spring brings a world in bloom, filled with fresh and vibrant energy, I use colour to capture that spirit and support a world that flourishes.
“It was a real pleasure to work with Kukka. Kukka showed a high level of professionalism, there was no deviation between the plan and the delivered steps.”
