Blended Fibers
Blended Fibers is a visual research book exploring six key textile fibers: cotton, wool, flax, silk, viscose, and acrylic. Bridging analog and digital processes, each chapter begins with a fiber’s microscopic cross-section, which is translated into graphic patterns, basic weave structures, and 3D forms modeled using 3D software. The book moves fluidly between scientific reference and visual experimentation, revealing the geometry and materiality hidden within textiles. Through digital tools and archival sources, Blended Fibers uncovers how the smallest elements of fabric shape its surface, offering a layered, visual understanding of fiber structure and its role in textile design.
About Blended Fibers
The book is the result of a collaboration between Sonia Górecka and Laura Luchtman (Kukka). For three months, we investigated how woven textiles can be designed and visualised using 3D software, combining Sonia’s expertise in 3D and Laura’s expertise in textiles. During the research, we became fascinated by the geometric cross-sections of textile fibres. The book Blended Fibers is a compilation of our visual research. About Riso Printing
Risograph printing was developed by the Japanese company Riso and is an intermediary between digital printing and screen printing. It is an environmentally friendly stencil printing process, known for its vibrant colours (which other printers cannot produce) and its specific textures. The Riso machine delivers ‘perfect imperfections’ when it picks up and shifts the paper, reminiscent of handmade screen prints. No print is exactly the same and these misregistrations or print marks are part of Riso’s charm.
The ink is made of fairly produced soy oil and the stencils of Japanese wax-coated paper. The machine uses very little energy as Riso printing is a cold printing process.
Production
Printing and binding by No Kiss.
