Kukka x kiten.kyoto

Project Scope

a textile collaboration in harmony

Tōzai is a chromatic collaboration between Kukka and kiten.kyoto, realised within the Mono Makers Program. The collection explores the interplay between East and West, ritual and rest.

Inspired by traditional Japanese ryōkan culture and the slow rhythms of bathing rituals, Tōzai reinterprets classic Japanese silhouettes into contemporary leisure pieces. Each design invites a sense of serenity and tactile delight.

The textiles are hand-dyed by Kyoto-based artisans using the age-old hikizome technique originally used for noren flags. These subtle, time-honoured methods breathe depth into every fabric. Soft gradients, expressive brushstrokes and layered transparencies mirror Kukka’s sensory impressions of Japan.

Colour is at the heart of the collection. Three palettes — soft jade green, airy blue, and warm reddish brown — reflect the rhythm of the day: from crisp dawn to the amber glow of dusk.

Tōzai is a gentle ode to Japanese craftsmanship, evoking comfort and chromatic kinship.
