Residential Rug

Project Scope

custom residential rug

I was commissioned to design a custom-made rug for a 1912 Rotterdam residential house. The house still had original features such as stained glass and ornamental ceilings, which inspired the design language. The idea was to create a rug that would enhance the existing features of the house and create a harmonious mix between the old and the new.

To achieve this, I sought inspiration from several sources, including Kukka’s tapestry “Chromarama II”. The design was loosely based on the tapestry, but with significant modifications to meet the specific requirements of the project. The tapestry design incorporates design elements that complement the stained glass and ornamental ceilings.

After finalising the design, the next step was to choose the right production technology. I proposed a wide range of production methods, such as hand-knotting, weaving, (hand) tufting and digital printing. After careful consideration, the client decided to use digital printing technology, a perfect choice for their needs. The result is a beautiful rug that perfectly complements the original features of the house and adds a touch of modern elegance and playfulness.
